Andrew Farkas is Chief Executive Officer of C-III Capital Partners. Mr. Farkas also serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Island Capital Group, a leading real estate merchant bank that is the controlling parent of C-III Capital Partners. Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies presently own and/or manage approximately $180 billion in assets. Other affiliated companies of Island Capital Group include Anubis Advisors and Island Global Yachting. Anubis Advisors provides strategic planning, executive management, restructuring, M&A and other financial services to Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies, including C-III Capital Partners. Island Capital Group was founded by Andrew Farkas in 2003, following the merger of Insignia Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE: IFS), with CB Richard Ellis. Prior to his founding of Island Capital, C-III and Anubis, Mr. Farkas was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Insignia Financial Group, a global real estate services company. Farkas founded Insignia in 1990 and in just eight years the company became the largest owner and operator of multifamily real estate in the United States. It was also among the largest owners and operators of commercial space in the U.S. By 2003, Insignia was among the top three leading commercial real estate services firms in the world with a dominant presence in the U.S., the UK, Europe, Asia and South America. The Insignia merger with CB Richard Ellis in July 2003 created the largest commercial real estate services company in the world. Andrew Farkas received a BA degree from Harvard University, where he majored in economics. He is involved in The Fresh Air Fund, NARAL, the ASPCA, AMFAR, The Doe Fund and various other health, education and welfare oriented charities.
Frank Garrison is the President of C-III Capital Partners. He also serves in the Office of the Chairman and as an Executive Managing Director and principal of Island Capital Group. In addition to his roles at C-III and Island Capital, Mr. Garrison is an Executive Managing Director of Anubis Advisors. Frank Garrison began his career practicing commercial law with Farris, Warfield and Kanaday where he specialized in securities, creditor’s rights and other commercial/corporate matters until 1982 when he became involved in the real estate and service company finance business. He joined Insignia Financial Group in 1992 and served as the President of Insignia Financial Services and held the title of Office of the Chairman of Insignia Financial Group. Mr. Garrison was with Insignia for approximately 12 years and was directly responsible for and oversaw or personally negotiated over 60 acquisitions of operating service companies, 90 public tender offers, multiple financings of both debt and equity for Insignia and the sale of various divisions and, ultimately, the remaining business in several public company transactions. In addition, Garrison was responsible for managing Insignia’s principal real estate investment business group and CMBS and distressed debt investment management group. From 2003 to 2007 Mr. Garrison remained involved in Island Capital Group’s CMBS fund business and a number of other Island Capital activities but from October 2005 through September 2007, Mr. Garrison served as President of Courage Capital Management, a registered investment advisor, with $1 billion of assets under management and offices in Boston, Nashville, Los Angeles and Mumbai, India. Mr. Garrison formally rejoined Island Capital Group in November 2007. Mr. Garrison serves on the National Real Estate Council for the Vanderbilt University Owen School of Management, is a member of the Board of Trustees of University School of Nashville, and a Board Member of the Frist Center for the Visual Arts where he chairs the Finance Committee. Mr. Garrison attended Vanderbilt University where he graduated in three years while earning a double major in Business and Economics and received a J.D. from Vanderbilt School of Law.
Jim Aston is Chief Financial Officer and an Executive Managing Director of C-III Capital Partners. He also fulfills these roles and is a principal of Island Capital Group. Jim Aston previously served as the Chief Financial Officer of Insignia Financial Group. During his time at Insignia, Aston presided over more than $7 billion of financings and he brings more than 20 years of experience in real estate, accounting and finance to C-III Capital Partners. Mr. Aston also serves as the Treasurer of Anubis Advisors, which provides strategic planning, executive management, restructuring, M&A and other financial services to Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies, including C-III Capital Partners. Prior to Insignia, Mr. Aston served as CFO of a public real estate company whose primary operations were acquired by Insignia and was a certified public accountant at predecessor firms of Ernst & Young for ten years, where his practice concentrated on real estate services and real estate investments. Mr. Aston received a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors from Clemson University, where he majored in Accounting.
Jeff Cohen is an Executive Managing Director of C-III Capital Partners and has primary responsibility for its mergers and acquisitions activity. He is also the President of Island Capital Group. He has been a principal of Island Capital since it was established in 2003. Mr. Cohen also serves as President of Anubis Advisors, which provides strategic planning, executive management, restructuring, M&A and other financial services to Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies, including C-III Capital Partners. Prior to joining Island Capital Group in 2003, Mr. Cohen was an Executive Vice President of Insignia Financial Group. During his time at Insignia, he focused on mergers and acquisitions, principal investment opportunities and Insignia's fund management activities. Before joining Insignia, Mr. Cohen served as a corporate attorney with the New York City law firm of Rogers & Wells (now Clifford Chance) where he primarily worked on matters relating to mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, and corporate finance. Mr. Cohen earned a juris doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Albany Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Vermont, where he majored in Political Science and Economics.
George Carleton is an Executive Managing Director of C-III Capital Partners and is integrally involved in a variety of C-III businesses particularly commercial loan servicing and investment management. He joined Island Capital Group at its inception in 2003 and also serves as an Executive Managing Director of Island. Mr. Carleton leads the Real Estate Investment and Finance Group at Island Capital. Mr. Carleton also serves as a Vice President of Anubis Advisors, which provides strategic planning, executive management, restructuring, M&A and other financial services to Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies, including C-III Capital Partners. Before joining Island Capital Group in 2003, Mr. Carleton served as Senior Managing Director of Insignia Financial Group. He was responsible for Insignia’s opportunity funds which invested primarily in securitized real estate debt. Mr. Carleton played an integral role in structuring and executing the securitization of billions of dollars of debt that was secured by real estate controlled by Insignia, including the first stand-alone securitized multi-family loan pool. For 12 years prior to Insignia, Mr. Carleton held various management positions at Travelers Insurance, where he was responsible for managing debt and equity real estate investments. Mr. Carleton received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Emory University, Florida Atlantic University and American University, where he majored in Chemistry, Finance/Accounting, and Real Estate Development, respectively.
Paul Hughson is an Executive Managing Director of C-III Capital Partners. Mr. Hughson joined Island Capital Group in July 2009 and serves as an Executive Managing Director. Prior to Island Capital Group, he enjoyed a 16 year banking relationship with Island and its predecessor company, Insignia Financial Group. Hughson is also a Vice President at Anubis Advisors, which provides strategic planning, executive management, restructuring, M&A and other financial services to Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies, including C-III Capital Partners. Before his affiliation with Island, Mr. Hughson was a member of the Lehman Brothers Global Real Estate Group for 15 years where he was the head of global credit distribution. Mr. Hughson joined Lehman in 1993 to develop Lehman Brothers’ conduit securitization platform and subsequently became responsible for all of Lehman’s proprietary and client based Agency CMBS and CRE CDO securitization businesses, bringing over $100B of new issue securitized product to market. He became the head of Lehman Brothers’ Bridge Equity business in 2004 and successfully redistributed approximately $4B of real estate equity into the institutional marketplace. From 1986 through 1993, Mr. Hughson practiced real estate law with Thacher Proffitt & Wood. Mr. Hughson received his J.D. from the University of Virginia and his B.A. from Tufts University.
Robert Lieber joined C-III Capital Partners in August 2010 as an Executive Managing Director. Mr. Lieber joined C-III after having served under New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development. Mr. Lieber also serves as an Executive Managing Director of Island Capital Group and a Vice President for Anubis Advisors, which provides strategic planning, executive management, restructuring, M&A and other financial services to Island Capital Group’s portfolio companies, including C-III Capital Partners. Prior to joining the Bloomberg administration in January of 2007, Mr. Lieber retired from Lehman Brothers after 23 years, serving most recently as a Managing Director in Lehman's Real Estate Private Equity Fund and before that as the Global Head of Real Estate Investment Banking. Institutional Investor Magazine recognized Mr. Lieber’s efforts and honored him with the "Deal of the Year" awards in 1998 and 2003. Mr. Lieber also received the title "Financier of the Year" in 2005 by Commercial Property News. He serves as a Trustee and Secretary of the urban Land Institute (ULI) and acts as Chairman of the New York District of ULI. He served as former Vice Chairman of the Zell-Lurie Real Estate Center at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Lieber holds a BA from the University of Colorado and an MBA from the Wharton School.
