Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Bob Peterson

As chairman and chief executive officer, Bob is responsible for setting the overall company strategy and providing executive oversight of all aspects of the organization. Bob joined Carter in 2001 as a principal owner and executive vice president and in 2002, assumed the role of chairman and CEO. Since then, Bob has led the transformation of Carter from a full-service commercial real estate company into a highly-focused real estate investment, development, and advisory firm. In September of 2011, Carter sold its brokerage and property management divisions to Cassidy Turley. Under his leadership, Carter has invested over $1 billion in the acquisition and development of multi-family, office, mixed-use and student housing real estate since 2004. In 2010, Bob led the Carter initiative to form a publicly listed, non-traded REIT, Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT, to acquire single-tenant, net-leased assets in the data center and healthcare sectors across the U.S.; to date the REIT has invested in over $2 billion of assets. Carter currently has approximately $600 million of mixed-use, multi-family and student housing projects in cities such as Atlanta, Columbus, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Sarasota and Tampa, among others. Prior to joining Carter, Bob was managing director of CarrAmerica Realty Company (NYSE: CRE) and president of CarrAmerica Development Inc. He also served as CEO of Peterson Properties, a full-service commercial real estate company, which he founded in 1979 and sold to CarrAmerica in 1996. Peterson Properties developed over 30 office and industrial projects totaling four million square feet, and handled more than $1 billion in investment transactions over a 17-year period. Bob has been consistently recognized within the industry and provides insights and market trends for both local and national media outlets. He was named an Atlanta Real Estate Icon in 2012 by Real Estate Forum magazine and has served as a guest lecturer for MBA students at the University of Georgia, as well as spoken to the Young President’s Organization.

James Shelton

Jim joined Carter in 2002 and has more than 29 years of real estate investment experience across acquisitions, development, sales, leasing, and capital markets activities. His primary focus is managing the day to day activities of Carter’s principal investing initiatives. This includes sourcing value add and equity development opportunities, structuring of equity, co-investment and debt for those opportunities and the investment management of each asset’s business plan. Jim is one of the principal owners of Carter. Since 2005 Carter has acquired or developed over 25 office, mixed-use and residential assets totaling approximately $750 million. In addition to its own portfolio, Carter has over $2.5 billion of assets under management for third party clients. Jim was born and raised in Atlanta. He is married to Elizabeth Shelton and they have three children.

Scott Taylor

As Carter’s president, Scott manages a number of day-to-day operations and leverages his relationships to source and create new business opportunities for Carter as an investor, developer and advisor. Carter is one of the nation’s top multi-disciplined developers and is currently handling mixed-use, multi-family, student housing, corporate/institutional and higher education projects across the country. Scott is one of the principal owners of Carter. Scott is a member of the Investment Committee for the Carter Real Estate Funds, Carter’s primary investment vehicle which currently oversees over $875 million in assets. In 2010, the company launched the $2 billion Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT, a non-traded, publicly-registered REIT focused on investing in single-tenant, net-leased assets in the data center and healthcare sectors. Over his 25-year career, Scott has been involved in the development and investment activities of more than 15 million square feet. Prior to joining Carter, Scott was president of Atlanta-based Holder Properties. He began his real estate career as an industrial/land broker with Cushman & Wakefield of Georgia in 1989.

John Carter

John strategically focuses on executing a robust pipeline of “mission critical”, high quality net-leased data center and healthcare, real estate acquisitions. John is Chief Executive Officer of Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT, Inc. and is Chairman of its Board of Directors. John is also Chief Executive Officer, Chief and member of the Investment Management Committee of Carter Validus Advisors, L.L.C. and Executive Vice President of Carter Real Estate Management Services, L.L.C. In addition, John currently serves as Vice Chairman and principal of Carter & Associates, L.L.C., one of the principals of Carter Validus’ sponsor, serving in such capacity since 2000. At Carter & Associates, John plays a key role in establishing and maintaining some of Carter & Associates’ most significant institutional client relationships. From December 2003 through December 2009, John completed in excess of $3.5 billion of real estate property acquisitions and financings representing 18.5 million square feet of real estate and in September 2005, was responsible for orchestrating one of Carter & Associates’ largest transactions, a $1 billion acquisition and financing of Class A office portfolio consisting of 23 buildings in six states. Prior to 2000, John founded Newport Partners in November 1989 and grew the company into a full service real estate firm with 63 associates throughout Florida, later selling Newport Partners to Carter & Associates. Prior to founding Newport Partners, John worked at Trammell Crow Company. In the early 1980s, John was focused on tax shelter, Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRBs) and other real estate financing transactions for Citicorp. John is also a founding board member of Gulfshore Bank, a community bank located in Tampa, Florida. John received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics with a minor in Mathematics from St. Lawrence University and a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University.
