The idea of Heritage Communities came to me decades ago when, as a young boy, I observed my parents caring for my grandmother. This vivacious woman helped care for me as well, showering me with love and instilling her values upon me. I vividly recall these joyous times along with the sadness we experienced when she suffered a stroke and life changed. Watching the loneliness she battled, her declining mental and physical health and the strain it put on my family all prompted my desire to work with seniors. Though my story is not unique, I vowed to form a senior living company that would hold itself to the highest standards and continuously strive to provide the best services and amenities. One where every resident would be treated like part of my family. More than 15 years ago, I partnered with Dave Underwood to build Shalimar Gardens, an Assisted Living and Memory Support community in Fremont, Neb. It was exactly my calling. Soon after, we formed Heritage Communities with one goal in mind—to create superior environments for seniors to thrive. During the Fremont project, Dave’s son Nate joined us and is my partner today, serving as CFO of Heritage Communities. Over the years, we evolved from just creating the buildings to operating them and developing exceptional programming. Today, we design and operate Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Support communities across Nebraska, Iowa and Arizona. Compassion, trust, respect and fun are our core values. ‘Fun’ may seem out of place in a setting where seniors have serious health care needs, but we want to make sure that the fun is not forgotten for our residents, associates, families and everyone we touch. For us, it’s an honor to do what we do every day, helping seniors remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Helping make their lives better.

Farhan Khan
Co-founder and chief executive officer of Heritage Communities, Farhan oversees the operation and management of our ten communities, meeting the needs of associates, residents and investors. He helped create and ensures our caregivers and staff are aligned with the strategy, vision and culture of our company. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Farhan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and is honored to help leave a positive mark on the senior living industry. He surrounds himself with a team of dedicated, hardworking, fun-loving people, making each day a joy to come to work, and knows that every decision is thoughtfully made with our residents and their families in mind. Farhan is involved with the Omaha Symphony and enjoys playing golf, skiing, traveling and spending time with his wife and two children. Nathan Underwood
Co-owner and chief financial officer of Heritage Communities, Nate oversees operating budgets, new developments, human capital and real estate. He thrives working in a mission-based business and loves the challenge of making sure our communities are great places to work and live. He approaches all tasks in a positive and thoughtful way and believes in constant growth and improvement. Nate graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a teaching degree and began his career teaching middle school in the Millard Public Schools. He is currently serving his third year as the learning chair on the Entrepreneurs’ Organization Nebraska board, drawing upon his experience in education to help Nebraska businesses like his own learn, grow and improve. Much of Nate’s free time is devoted to his wife and their three children, Luke, Anna and Landon. He also enjoys playing golf and singing in his church choir.
