The Shelter Group is a privately held real estate development and property management company founded in 1977 by Mark K. Joseph and specializing in multifamily and senior living communities. The Shelter Group actively seeks acquisitions of existing senior living communities. We are generally looking for purpose built communities of 60 or more units. Jeffrey Hettleman

Jeffrey K. Hettleman is a Partner and Executive Vice President of The Shelter Group. Mr. Hettleman joined the company in 1994. Shelter develops, owns and manages multifamily and senior living communities in the eastern region of the country. Mr. Hettleman helps lead the Company’s affordable housing business and capital relationships and has oversight responsibility for the Company’s owned multifamily assets. Prior to joining Shelter, Mr. Hettleman was an attorney at the law firm of Piper & Marbury in Baltimore, Maryland where he specialized in structuring and closing real estate and corporate transactions.

David Carliner

David D. Carliner is a Partner and Executive Vice President of Shelter Development. Mr. Carliner’s responsibilities include development and acquisitions of all of the Company’s product lines. Mr. Carliner began his career at Meridian Healthcare, where he ultimately oversaw all aspects of new facility development. During his 12-year tenure, the organization grew from 20 to over 40 facilities. Following the acquisition of Meridian by Genesis Health Ventures, Mr. Carliner worked with New Enterprise Associates to form Elder Health, a Medicare HMO, which grew to serve almost 400,000 people before it was sold to Health Spring.

Arnold Richman

Arnold I. Richman is Chairman of The Shelter Group. Prior to joining Shelter in 1995, Mr. Richman spent 25 years as a partner of Meridian Healthcare, a privately held company that developed and managed nursing homes and related ancillary businesses. At Meridian, Mr. Richman was directly responsible for the management and operations of health care facilities, serving as Vice President of Operations, Executive Vice President and Chairman of the company. During the 1980’s, a period of significant growth for Meridian, Mr. Richman was directly responsible for development and acquisition activities.

Marilynn Duker

Marilynn K. Duker is President of The Shelter Group. As President of The Shelter Group, she is responsible for all three Shelter Group companies: Shelter Development, Shelter Properties and Brightview Senior Living. Ms. Duker joined Shelter in 1982. She began her career as a developer and since then, she has been involved in every phase of Shelter's operations and growth. Ms. Duker became a Partner and President of Shelter Development and Shelter Properties in 1995 and of Brightview Senior Living in 2008. Ms. Duker has overall responsibility for directing both the operations and long term growth of The Shelter Group.
